Innovation Boot Camp (IBC) is the 10th year annual offering of professional development specifically designed for k-12 educators across North Carolina, hosted by NC State’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. If you are a K-12 educator tasked with supporting and leading your school in its transition to incorporate digital tools and resources into curriculum and instruction to enhance and transform student-centered learning, then this is the place for you.

SWIMMING the Technology Waters |
Innovation Boot Camp is IMMERSIVE! It is called boot camp for a reason and we definitely hit the ground running to make the most of your learning and your needs. When we talk about digital and blended learning and teaching as a swimming pool, we agree that this excerpt from Teach Like a Pirate, by Dave Burgess, is spot on:
"The secret to becoming... a better teacher - is total immersion. Your ability to completely give yourself up to the moment and fully "be" with your students is an awesome and unmistakably powerful technique.... Students can feel when you are truly present.....
Here is one way to illustrate immersion. If you are out on the pool deck and someone asks you to focus on the swimming pool, what does that mean? Would you go stand at the side and stare at it? Would you climb to the lifeguard tower and watch from above? Focus is, after all, supposed to be a powerful and effective strategy.... [But consider instead] that you are on the pool deck and someone tells you to immerse yourself in the swimming pool. What would that look like? What is implied when someone asks you to immerse yourself in a pool? You're wet! You're in the water!
You're either swimming or you're drowning. It is a qualitatively different experience."
When you walk by the open door of a classroom, you can tell after a couple of minutes whether the teacher is a lifeguard or a swimmer. A lifeguard sits above the actions, but a swimmer is out participating and an integral part of the action!
it is far more powerful to swim with your students. They need the full benefit of your complete immersion in the technology waters. So, what lane are you in?
Innovation Boot Camp 2019 is designed to build capacity, give new pedagogical ideas to teachers, and provide a space to swim the digital waters and explore the possibilities.
